( His royal Excellency)

✍️ Eight✍️

“Mom get up we gotta go” I pulled the covers off of her. “We gotta be there by seven”

She groaned and walked into the bathroom shutting the door behind her.

She’s getting her chemo today and she’s already in a pissy mood. I’m trying to get her better and she’s just being mean, which is very frustrating. Also Mr. Maxwell won’t leave my side, he doesn’t trust that I’ll stay, but where would I go? He drove me here and my mother has my car since hers broke down.

She walks out of the bathroom and looks at me. “You gonna stand here while I get dressed? Go get in the car” she spits at me. I sigh and walk away. “You idiot whore” she says right before I open the door.

She could’ve at least waited until I left. I don’t have to do this, I don’t have to take this mans money I can give it back to him just as easily.

I get into Mr. Maxwells car and wait in silence. “What happened?” He asked.

I’m not say gonna say anything I don’t feel like talking. I look out the window and look at the house.

I feel like screaming at her. She’s so disrespectful to me, I don’t deserve to be treated like this, do I? Am I a whore for doing this? Is this prostitution? Am I selling my body to this man? Isn’t this illegal? Oh my God. I didn’t even think of that. Now I feel like crying. I’m a whore and a
prostitute and I don’t deserve to be treated like a lady.

I feel something fall down my face and I realize it’s a tear. I quickly wipe it away so Mr. Maxwell doesn’t notice but he does.

“What the hell happened, Valentina?” He grabbed my arm.

“Nothing” I said.

“Why are you crying?”

“Im not”

He didn’t say anything after that he just looked at the side of my face. He doesn’t have to work today unfortunately, I’d just like to be alone. Go somewhere to think by myself, he doesn’t seem to get that. It’s like he’s afraid to leave me alone or something, it’s weird.

My mother walks comes out the house and toward the car. “We’ll talk about it later, Valentina” he says before my mother gets in. He sounds like a parent.

“Why aren’t you in the other car?” I asked her leaning my head on my hand.

“I crashed it”

“You what?” I yelled. “You crashed my car? When?” I turned around to look at her.

“Sometime last week”

“And you didn’t call me?”

“That car was old anyway and it was breaking down. We can buy new cars now”

“You emphasized the ‘we’ for what?” I asked.

“Because we both can get new cars now”

“Both of us aren’t getting new cars. You’re not getting a new- im not getting- no one is getting cars!”

“How am I going to get around?!” She yelled back.

“Call a cab!” I turned around and yelled to her. “Now can you please drive?” I said looking at Mr. Maxwell.

He started the car and cruised down the street. Today is already starting to be a bad day.

“Just get me home I’m tired” my mother whined as I pushed her in her wheel chair.
“I know”

“Take me home, Valentina!”

“I am! What do you think I’m doing?”

“You’re taking your sweet time that’s what your doing”

We got to the car and we finally were on our way to her house. I dropped her off and tried to leave as quickly as I could but she kept asking for things. “Pick this up, throw that away, don’t touch that, get out, don’t leave”

When I finally got out of there the car ride back to Mr. Maxwells’ place was quick and quiet but I knew that our earlier conversation wouldn’t go unspoken.

I walk inside and walk to the bedroom getting dressed for the Masseys’ who are coming by later. I pull out some clothes and throw them on the bed.

I want to focus on what I need to do and all the lies I need to come up with but I just can’t right now. Too many things are flooding my brain and it hurts. Sitting on the bed with my head in my hands I hear Mr. Maxwell come in.

“The Masseys’ cancelled something came up”

Good cause I’m too emotionally messed up to talk to people right now. “Ok” I told him and put the clothes back in the closet.

“Valentina…” he called. I crawled in the bed burying myself underneath the covers, completely ignoring him.

“What happened?” I felt myself falling towards the edge of the bed as Mr. Maxwell sat down.

“Valentina, I should warn you I always have my way so I suggest you talk”

I lifted pulled the covers off my face and sat up. When I looked at him he had the softest most concerned face I have ever seen.

I took a deep breath before I spoke. “I don’t want to talk about it, please don’t make me”

“You’re going too, and you still have to tell me about why you acted so weird during the Father’s Day party”

I slammed my head on the pillow and looked at the ceiling. “I feel sick, Joshua”

“No you don’t”

“Take care of me” I whined.
“You’re not sick, you just had a bad day”

“You don’t say” I said sarcastically. “I don’t wanna talk” I rolled on my side turning away from him and I felt his hand snake around my waist.

“Why are you so sad?” He asked.

“I’m not sad”

“Come on, Valentina, you’re depressed”

“I’m not depressed” I looked at him.

“You showing all the signs”

I sat up and looked at him with a shocked expression. “The signs? You’re diagnosing me?” I asked.

“No, i’m trying to help you”
“With what? You’re calling me crazy” I grabbed the pillow and smacked him across his head.

I know what he means maybe I’m a little sad and I could use a little cheering up but that’s why I’m picking a fight with him. Cause I feel like it and I’m trying to be happy right now, plus he deserves it for being how he was being yesterday.

“Being depressed doesn’t mean your crazy. Im not calling you crazy” he stood up and grabbed the pillow from me.

“Yes you are and I’m not crazy, I’m normal” I grabbed another pillow and hit him in the head. His hair was all messed in his face so I moved it out of the way for him.

“Stop” he grabbed the other pillow and threw it across the floor.
I stood up on the bed and looked down at him. “Why you gotta be so grumpy for? You the one who called me depressed”

“Sit down your wrinkling my sheets” he grabbed my legs and I fell on the bed.

Standing back up I got in my fighting stance. “Stop messing with me, Joshua. I can cause some serious damage”

“To what?”

“To your face”

“Then I’ll just have to tie you down” he bit his lip.

My heart is starting to beat faster, he’s doing it again but he’s just flirting he’s playing with my emotions and I won’t fall for it.

“Go ahead and try” He smirked at me. I put my arms up in defense not really sure of what he would do.

He tried to grab my leg but I quickly moved back.

“Stop it” i said quickly. “I was just playing with you”

I tried to get him to stop but he was just so determined to get me.

“I don’t play games, Valentina. I always get my way” he held me down.

I raised my eyebrows. “Okay” I said. He let me up and sat next to me.

“Tell me what happened with you earlier today”
I sighed and looked at the ground. “Just something’s she said to me, it’s nothing”

“What’d she say to you?”

“She called me a whore” I shrugged. “I shouldn’t have gotten as upset as I did”

“You’re not a whore” he said.

“I just felt-”

“You’re not a whore, Valentina” he cut me off. “No matter what your mother says”

I sighed and looked at my hands.

“Now tell me about the foster homes”

My heart dropped as soon as he said that. “I don’t want to talk about that”

“Look I know that-”
“I already told you, I don’t want to talk about it” I said a little frustrated.

“Why not?”

“Because I don’t trust you, Joshua” I said.
